Exciting times!

It's been a month since our last update and there have been a lot of exciting things going on!

We saw a post by Kim of True Up about a website called Stickk. It's a site that helps you stick to your goals by putting it out there. Kim offered to referee if someone wanted to challenge themselves to create a fabric collection. We've been wanting to create a collection for quite some time but hadn't yet begun so we jumped at the opportunity to use Stickk to commit to the goal. Kim signed on as our ref and the planning began!

April 28 (our wedding anniversary) is the date we chose as the collection release giving us a total of 70 days. We have had many ideas for collection themes but we wanted something new for this. We spent a few days mulling it over and one idea seemed to be really inspiring us. We borrowed many books from the library, along with some books from our personal library, to use for research and inspiration.

We're now in the design phase. We have so many ideas for the collection we don't know if they'll all make the final cut. One of the most fun we're having is with the naming. We're probably getting ahead of ourselves naming designs that haven't yet been designed but it helps keep things organized in our minds - and it's fun!  We're keeping the topic quiet for now but I'll divulge a name of one design that we're pretty sure will make the final cut: 'Changeling Tears'. You'll probably be able to figure out the collection's theme with a few google searches.

Not related to surface design, but still design related, is a piece Mat did for an upcoming art show at Atomic Toybot called Fordmania! - a show featuring pieces based on Toronto's mayor. Here is a small segment of the digital painting titled 'His burden' that Mat submitted.

We have lots more on the go, but that's it for this update. Next time I'll be able to show more.

2011 roundup

For our own record (and egos) I thought I'd compile a list of our 2011 contest entries that made it into the top 10 in Spoonflower's weekly design contests.

  • Leprechauns. Entries closed March 8, 2011.

  • Maps. Entries closed March 22, 2011.

  • Folk Tales. Entries closed May 17, 2011.

  • Fishing. Entries closed May 31, 2011.

  • Coffee. Closed on July 26, 2011. *First Place*

  • Sharks. Closed on August 2, 2011.

  • Bowling. Closed August 30, 2011.

  • Military. Closed on Nov. 1, 2011.

  • Advent Calendar Kits. Closed Nov. 15, 2011.

  • Nine in the top ten including one first place out of forty-nine weeks (not including project selvage weeks and the staff contest week).

But it wasn't about winning or how well we would do. It was about actually doing it. Entering each week. Thinking up a design for each given topic. Pushing ourselves. In the process we gained confidence and a love of surface design - an area of design we had never thought of before as a career option.

    New year, new contest entries.

Just because our 'Year of Spoonflower contests' has come to an end that doesn't mean we aren't going to still enter! Maybe not each and every contest, but I expect we'll still enter many. So far this year we've entered twice - Cityscapes and Street Art (graffiti).

Our Cityscapes entry, Basel, came in 8th place! We based it on a place that's very dear to our hearts and I think it shows.

    Basel (one day)

Our most recent entry, Toronto Subway Trains, is entered in the Street Art/Graffiti contest that ends this upcoming Thursday.

    Toronto Subway Cars

Some of the soon to come topics include jellyfish, ditsy sea creatures and art deco. Our minds are churning!

    Crafterhours iSpy

Crafterhours put together an iSpy quilting fabric swap using Spoonflower fabrics and someone chose one of designs (What's for Breakfast) to be included.

Always such a treat when someone uses one of our designs!!

    We did it!

A whole year of entries! There were a few weeks where the weekly contest was on hiatus during Project Selvage so it wasn't a full 52 entries but 48 is nothing to sneeze at. We're thrilled to have become part of the Spoonflower community. We've met new friends, our imagination have flourished, productivity has increased in other aspects of our lives. Just goes to show that there is room on full plates.

On to 2012 - we'll still be entering contests when we feel we have a good idea and design to go along with it. We'll be working on our own ideas for collections. Refining some old designs. Sewing with fabric printed with our designs (hello weekly contest quilt - now we just need to learn how to quilt) and branching out.

Our year of Spoonflower has been a growing experience far beyond what we knew we were getting ourselves into.
